I remember the first time someone commented on the fact that I seem to always have a smile on my face. It was at the headquarters offices of American Airlines, where once upon a time I worked as a software analyst. The comment also included something like, “His smile always makes you wonder what he’s up to.”

Smiling guy

I actually loved this perception. I still love the idea that my smile has the power to make people wonder what I’m up to. Often I smile because I’m thinking about something funny. (There’s a comedy routine going on in my head 24/7, in case you didn’t know this about me.)

It’s true what they say. Smiles are infectious. Try it for one day. Maybe you already smile as often as I do, but try paying special attention to the reactions you get. Try it on a stranger. You may be surprised.

Smiles can even be heard. Wait…what? It’s true. Smile next time you speak to someone by phone. Listen closely. You’ll likely hear them smiling back.

Thich Nhat Hanh, author of The Miracle of Mindfulness recommends smiling during meditation.

I recommend smiling at random. It feels good, and yes… people will wonder what the heck you’re up to. It might even connect you with your next client, a new friend, or the love of your life.
