One of my favorite quotes is this one.
Different is better than better.
––Ryan Clark, Rainmaker FM
I share this quote regularly and often. Some of us recognize and revel in the fact that we’re truly and uniquely different. Some of us want to be all of this. I’ve come to learn that the key to reveling in one’s uniqueness lies in being one’s self in every way possible.
Today I was inspired to write about this favorite quote of mine while perusing my list of content topic ideas. “Different is better” wasn’t even on my list of ideas, but David Bowie was. I added his name to this list some months ago. Funny thing is, I don’t recall what I was thinking at the time. I can tell you that I sure as hell wasn’t planning to write about his passing or how it affected me. Suffice it to say, his passing did have an impact on me. To state the obvious, David Bowie showed the world that different can in fact be amazing.
David Bowie showed the world that different can be amazing.
Some may lose their minds when I say what I’m about to say. David Bowie wasn’t the most talented singer nor song writer that pop music has ever known. He was good at both, and certainly had moments of greatness in both singing and writing music. Bowie was the ultimate master of being his unique self in every possible way. This was possibly his greatest gift to the world. Not because he was a pop culture treasure, but because he served to show us the truth in “different is better.”
Hopefully you can appreciate what this has to do with marketing. Hopefully you can appreciate what this has to do with you and me. Just in case, let me spell it out for you. Being uniquely different, being ourselves in every possible way is how we attract clients, friends and even family that we respect and admire. These are the people we deserve to work with. These are the people we should aspire to spend time with. These are definitely the people that we should play with.
